State of New Jersey Marked William & John Henry U.S. 1808 Contract Flintlock Musket - NSN, 69 cal., 45 inch round bbl., bright finish, walnut stock. One of approximately 4,500 reported to have been delivered by William and John J. Henry circa 1809-1812 under a 10,000 gun U.S. Government contract, based on the Harpers Ferry Armory pattern Model 1795 muskets. “Eagle/US” marked at the center of the lock and “J.HENRY/PHILA” marked vertically in an arch behind the hammer. “Eagle head/CT” proof on the left of the breech as typically seen on these 1808 contract muskets. The top of the barrel has the State of New Jersey marking: “SNJ.”“GDM” (George D. Moller) collection initials marked at the toe of the stock. Includes a socket bayonet and reproduction leather sling. Includes a leather sling. CONDITION: Very good, with the metal surfaces having a mottled gray patina. The refinished stock is good with some wood absent at the top of the lock, couple chips and some minor handling marks. Mechanically excellent. Provenance: The George Moller Collection. U.S. Harpers Ferry Model 1795 Type III Flintlock Musket Dated 1809 with Bayonet -
Serial no. 118x7, 69 cal., 44 3/4 inch round bbl., bright finish, walnut stock. Approximately 7,348 Model 1795 muskets were manufactured by Harpers Ferry in the year 1809. The lock plate is marked “HARPERS/FERRY/1809” vertically at the rear, with the shield bearing “eagle/US” at the center. The serial number “118x7” (the x is an obliterated number) and two sunken oval proofs appear on the upper left quarter at the rear of the barrel. Bayonet lug on top of the barrel towards the muzzle, brass blade front sight on the rear strap of the front barrel band. Sling swivels on the middle band and ahead of the trigger guard. “GDM” (George D. Moller) collection initials marked at the toe of the stock. Includes a socket bayonet and period leather sling. CONDITION: Very good with mostly bright surfaces and some scattered light pitting overall, moderate flash pitting, and some light wear to some of the markings in the metal. Stock is also very good with scattered light scratches and chips, and a gouge on the right rear of the buttstock. Mechanically fine. Included bayonet is good with mottled dark brown patina overall and scattered light pitting, sling is very good with some age related cracking and wear. Provenance: The George Moller Collection. U.S. Springfield Model 1795 Type I Flintlock Musket Dated 1801 with Bayonet - NSN, 69 cal., 44 3/4 inch round bbl., bright finish. The Model 1795 is historically significant as the first official standardized U.S. martial arm and the first firearm manufactured at the U.S. armories. The Model 1795 was based on the French Model 1766 widely used during the Revolution, and was the main infantry arm of the War of 1812. This musket has the correct Type I lock markings used until 1802: eagle and shield emblem over a script “US” in the center and “SPRINGFIELD” marked vertically in an arch at the rear. The buttplate is dated 1801. The barrel is marked “US” at the top at the breech along with “SS”, “P/eagle head/V” proofs and condemnation mark on the left side. “GDM” (George D. Moller) collection initials marked at the toe of the stock. Includes a socket bayonet and leather sling. CONDITION: Good. The metal surfaces have a brown-gray appearance with minor-moderate pitting throughout. The barrel has a dent and grinding marks towards the muzzle. The pan screw is a replacement and the rear barrel spring is broken. The refinished stock is very good with a couple hairline stress cracks, “N” lightly hand marked on buttstock and minimal handling marks. The bayonet is good with dark pitting. Mechanically fine. LOT 1129 Whitney 1798 U.S. Contract Flintlock Musket with Bayonet - NSN, 69 cal., 44 5/8 inch round bbl., bright finish, walnut stock. Moller noted this musket as a Model 1798 Type I. Around 1,000 of this type were manufactured in 1801 and 1802. It has a bayonet stud on top near the muzzle, brass blade front sight on the rear strap of the upper barrel band, “eagle/NEW HAVEN.” on the center of the lock, “U.STATES” on the tail of the lock (only partial final “S” at the edge), a socket bayonet with “WM” marking at the base of the blade, a modern leather sling, and “GDM” lightly stamped at the toe. CONDITION: Good with mottled gray patina and moderate pitting, no visible barrel markings, faded central lock marking, and moderate overall wear. The re-oiled stock is also good and has some chips and slivers absent at the edges, general minor dings and scratches, and even re-oiled finish. The bayonet is fair and is dark brown with moderate oxidation and a crack in the socket. The frizzen does not snap open, but the lock otherwise is mechanically fine.
