Extremely Scarce Documented U.S. Harpers Ferry Model 1817 Type II Artillery/Cadet Flintlock Musket with Bayonet - NSN, 69 cal., 36 1/8 inch round bbl., bright finish, walnut stock. Harpers Ferry Armory manufactured an unknown quantity of these 36 inch barrel muskets between 1817 and 1822 for Cadet use. Model 1817 Artillery/Cadet muskets are described on pages 440-444 of George D. Moller’s book “American Military Shoulder Arms Volume II” with this exact musket pictured at the top of page 442. The Model 1795 lock plate is marked “HARPERS/FERRY/1817” vertically behind the hammer with the eagle and shield motif above “US” between the hammer and the fixed iron flash pan. “US” ahead of “eagle head/P” sunken oval proofs marked on the left of the breech. The full length stock is fitted with three barrel bands and sling swivels mounted on the middle band and ahead of the trigger guard. “GDM” (George D. Moller) collection initials marked at the toe of the stock. Includes a socket bayonet and reproduction leather sling. CONDITION: Good with scattered light to moderate pitting, some light wear to the eagle with otherwise crisp markings at the tail of the lock. Stock is very good with attractive raised grain, scattered scratches and dents, a few mild gouges on the right of the forend, cracks on both ends of the lock, a crack ahead of the rear lock screw, and some chips behind the barrel tang. Mechanically fine. Included bayonet is good with scattered patches of dark pitting. A difficult to find Harpers Ferry Model 1817 Artillery/Cadet musket that would make a fine addition to any U.S. Martial collection! Provenance: The George Moller Collection. Estimate: 4,500 - 6,500
LOT 1148 Exceptional Documented Daniel Henkels U.S. Contract Flintlock Musket - NSN, 69 cal., 42 1/8 inch round bbl., bright finish, walnut stock. This musket was manufactured by John J. Henry and delivered by Daniel Henkels between 1815-1817 under a 2,000 gun U.S. Government contract dated February 14th, 1815. Daniel Henkels U.S. contract muskets are described on pages 186-187 of George D. Moller’s book “American Military Shoulder Arms Volume II” with this exact musket pictured on both pages. “D. HENKELS” marked at the center of the lock, “F” (George Flegal) inspection initial ahead of a “P” proof and “US” marked on the left quarter of the breech, “V/GF” (George Flegal) inspection initials marked on the left stock flat, “W.B” inspection initials marked on the tail of the left stock flat and behind the lower tang, and assembly number “4” marked on various components including parts inside of the lock. “GDM” (George D. Moller) collection initials marked at the toe of the stock. Includes a reproduction leather sling. CONDITION: Exceptionally fine with attractive bright surfaces overall, some scattered areas of very light freckling, and sharp edges and markings in the metal. Stock is very fine with some light scratches and dents, a few light scuffs, a few minor chips in the ramrod channel, and attractive grain with defined edges. Mechanically excellent. U.S. Springfield Model 1812 Type III Flintlock Musket with Very Scarce Matching Serial Numbered Bayonet - Serial no. Aa74, 69 cal., 42 inch round bbl., bright finish, walnut stock. Reportedly, 16,649 of these Model 1812 Type III muskets were manufactured between 1816 and 1817. It has a bayonet stud on top near the muzzle, brass blade front sight on the rear strap of the front barrel band, “1816” dated lock with “US/eagle and shield/SPRINGFIELD” marked at the center, “P/eagle head/V” proofs on the left breech end of the barrel, serial number “Aa 74” marked at the top of the breech end of the barrel, “1817” (7 is faint) dated barrel tang, circled script “ET” (Elisha Tobey) inspection cartouche marked on the left stock flat, and an “1816” dated buttplate tang. “GDM” (George D. Moller) collection initials marked at the toe of the stock. Includes a US socket bayonet marked with matching serial number “Aa74” and Watervliet Arsenal leather sling. Model 1812 Type III muskets are described on pages 95-100 of George D. Moller’s book “American Military Shoulder Arms Volume II”. CONDITION: Very good with some scattered light pitting, and mostly clear markings in the metal. Stock is also very good with scattered light scratches, a crack on either end of the lock, a crack above the side plate, and various small chips around the buttplate. Mechanically excellent. Included bayonet is also very good with scattered light pitting and sharp edges, sling is also very good with some light cracking. A rare combination in having a matching serial numbered bayonet to accompany this attractive U.S. Springfield Model 1812 musket! Provenance: The George Moller Collection.
