Finest Known Blued Remington Zigzag Derringer

One of only 1,000 Remington Zigzags were produced, and are historically significant as Remington’s first handgun designed for the
metallic cartridge.

Rare and Extraordinary: the Finest Known Blued Remington Zigzag Derringer - Serial no. 778, 22 RF cal., 3 3/16 inch 6 barrel cluster bbl., blue/ silver finish, hard rubber grips. Also known as the “Zigzag Pepperbox”, Remington manufactured only about 1,000 of these derringers in 1861 and 1862. The left side of the frame is marked “ELLIOTS’ PATENTS/AUG. 17, 1858/MAY 29, 1860”, and the right side is marked “MANUFACTURED BY/ REMINGTONS/ILION, N.Y.” The serial number is marked under the left grip panel on the frame. The derringer has a six round revolving barrel cluster with a brass pin front sight mounted on each rib. There is a notch in the rear of the frame which serves as the rear sight. Ring trigger which is moved forward and then pulled rearward to rotate the barrels, cock and fire. The barrels are blue, and the frame silver plated. Fitted with smooth two-piece hard rubber grips. This was Remington’s first handgun designed for the metallic cartridge.
CONDITION: Excellent. The barrels retain 95% original blue finish with
the balance a smooth brown patina. The rear and butt of the frame are
a smooth dark untouched “black” toned silver. The left side of the frame retains 98% of the original silver plating, the right side shows 95% plus with the balance having a smooth dark patina. The grips are excellent with a
few minor dings and handling marks. The markings are clear. Mechanically excellent. This is the finest known Remington Zigzag Derringer! Provenance: The Milan J. Turk Collection.
