 LOT 3236
Colt Medium Frame Lightning Slide Action Saddle
Ring Baby Carbine - Serial no. 17218, 32-20 cal., 20 inch octagon bbl., blue
finish, walnut stock. This is a nice example of a medium frame Colt Lighting saddle ring
carbine manufactured in 1886. It is estimated that only 89,777 total of the carbine and rifle were
produced between 1884 and 1902. This particular carbine is also called the “Baby Carbine” because the
barrel is slimmer and lighter than the standard carbine, weighing in at a pound lighter. The top of the barrel
is marked: “COLT’S PT.F.A. MFG. CO. HARTFORD CT. U.S.A/+ ELLIOTS PATENTS MAY 29. 1883. SEPT. 18. 1883+”, “32 Cal”
is marked on the left rear, the Rampant Colt appears on the left side of the frame and the serial number on the lower tang.
The front sight is missing and the rear sight is an adjustable carbine type. Saddle ring, with leather strap, and staple attached to the left side of the receiver, checkered forearm and smooth straight grip stock with a steel carbine buttplate.
CONDITION: Excellent. The carbine retains 90% of the original finish with thinning on the receiver and trigger guard and some light spotting on the barrel and receiver. There is some smooth brown patina on the receiver, trigger guard and lower tang. The sides of the hammer show strong bright case colors. The wood is excellent with some minor dents and dings. The checkering
on the forearm is crisp. The barrel markings are crisp (the ends of the lines are partially covered by the rear sight), Rampant Colt is clear on the receiver. Mechanically fine.
Provenance: The Milan J. Turk Collection.
Estimate: 6,000 - 8,000
LOT 3237
Colt Medium Frame Lightning Slide Action Carbine - Serial no. 87567, 32-20 cal., 26 inch
octagon bbl., blue finish, walnut stock. This is an excellent example of a scarce medium frame Colt Lighting rifle in .32-20 caliber. These Colt rifles
were never a large success and the survivability rates this condition are extremely low. It is estimated that only 89,777 total were produced with
production ending in December 1898, indicating that this rifle was produced almost at the end of production. It has the desirable 26 inch octagon barrel and
the top of the barrel is marked: “COLT’S PT.F.A. MFG. CO. HARTFORD CT. U.S.A./PATENTED MAY 29. SEPT 18. 83 MAY 22. 85 JUNE 15 86. FEB 22. 87” and directly in front of the receiver
it is marked “32 Cal”. The left side of the receiver has the large standing Rampant Colt logo, with the serial number on the lower tang and it is fitted with an adjustable semi-buckhorn rear
sight with the German silver blade front sight. It has the standard straight grip walnut stock and forearm with a crescent buttplate.
CONDITION: Excellent with a 97% original blued finish overall with wear on the edges and high spots, some thinning on the magazine tube, underside of the trigger guard and lower tang area, and a few very minor scratches on the sides of the receiver. The hammer retains 95% bright case colors and the buttplate shows a smooth patina. The buttstock and forearm are near excellent and show evidence of an old light cleaning. Mechanically excellent.
Provenance: The Milan J. Turk Collection.
Estimate: 4,500 - 6,500
