Scarce Martially Inspected USN Remington Model 1865
Navy Rolling Block Pistol - Serial no. 862, 50 RF cal., 8 1/2 inch round bbl., blue/casehardened finish, walnut stock.
Manufactured from 1866 to 1870 with a total production of around 6,500, this was Remington’s first Rolling Block Pistol, and it is
easily identified by its distinctive spur trigger. The Rolling Block action is generally considered to be one of the strongest actions ever made.
The top of the barrel is marked with the naval anchor, and the right side of the frame is marked with the inspector’s markings “P/F.C.W.” The left
side of the frame is marked “REMINGTON ILION N.Y. U.S.A./PAT. MAY 30 NOV. 15TH 1864 APRIL 17TH 1866”. The serial number is marked on the bottom
of the barrel ahead of the forearm. The front sight is the standard fixed pinched style, and a notch in the top of the breechblock serves as the rear sight. Casehardened frame, with a smooth trigger, checkered breechblock handle and hammer spur, smooth walnut forearm and smooth one piece grip with
a boxed “HW” cartouche on the lower left side.
CONDITION: Very good. The barrel retains 40% thinned original blue finish with some minor pitting. The trigger sheath retains 90% of the faded original blue finish. A hole has been drilled in front and behind the trigger (most likely to add trigger guard, now absent). The frame retains flashes of original case colors and otherwise has aged to a gray patina. Overall there is some minor spotting. The grip is good with some chips missing from the bottom edge and numerous minor pressure dents on the butt, along with some minor dings and scratches. The cartouche is legible. The forearm is very good with numerous minor handling marks. Mechanically excellent.
Provenance: The Milan J. Turk Collection.
Estimate: 6,000 - 9,000

LOT 3282
Scarce Civilian Remington Model 1865 Navy Rolling Block Pistol - NSN, 50 RF cal., 8 1/2 inch round bbl., blue/casehardened
finish, fancy walnut stock. This is a very fine Civilian production single shot Model 1865 Navy Rolling Block Pistol that was manufactured by Remington between 1866 and 1870. It has the distinctive spur trigger which identifies it as the first of the Remington Rolling Block pistols. The pistol
has a blued barrel, color casehardened frame and fancy, highly figured walnut forearm and one-piece grip. The left side of the frame is roll-stamped with the two-line legend: “REMINGTONS ILION N.Y. U.S.A./PAT. MAY 3rd NOV. 15th 1864 APRIL 17th 1866”. The top of the barrel is stamped with an
anchor inspection mark. The pistol lacks the naval inspector’s markings on the right side of the frame, which are found on the U.S. Navy contract Model
1865 pistols. The pistol is in the original rimfire configuration, and the breechblock retains the original rimfire firing pin. The Model 1865 Pistol was the first of
the Remington Rolling Block Pistols. Original civilian production, rimfire examples are scarce; most Model 1865 pistols were apparently altered by the factory to
Model 1867 configuration with trigger guard and were fitted with centerfire breechblocks.
CONDITION: Very fine. The barrel retains 70% of the original blue finish. The frame, breechblock and hammer have 60% plus of the original color casehardened finish with strong case colors. The hammer and breechblock pins have most of the fiery, niter blue finish. The barrel and frame markings are crisp. The fancy walnut grip and forearm are both in
very fine condition with some minor storage marks. Most of the high polish varnish finish remains. Mechanically excellent. This is a very fine example of a scarce civilian production Remington Model 1865 Navy Rolling Block Pistol.
Provenance: The Milan J. Turk Collection.
Estimate: 5,000 - 7,000
