Very Scarce “Grip Extractor” Brown Manufacturing Co. Dual Ignition Ballard Patent Sporting Rifle - Serial no. 20362, 44 cal., 28 inch octagon bbl., blue/casehardened finish, walnut stock. Less than 50 of the early Brown Manufacturing Co. Ballard rifles manufactured c. 1869 are estimated to have
been made with the manually operated extractor with knurled grip pads on the sides of the frame at the breech. These are very hard to find and are a rare sub-variant of the already limited Brown Ballard rifles which only totaled around 1,700 rifles in 1869-1873. The rifle also features the dual
ignition system (rimfire and percussion), a blade front sight with steel dovetailed base, notch and folding leaf rear sight, matching serial numbers on the top of the octagonal receiver and barrel, the three-line Brown and Ballard patent markings on the left side of the frame, and smooth stock and forearm.
CONDITION: Very good with mostly mottle gray and brown patina on the barrel, 40% plus original case colors, brighter case colors in the protected areas, smooth smoky gray patina on the balance, and minor age and storage related wear overall. The refinished buttstock is very good and has minor edge wear and several scratches
and dings, and most of the glossy finish remains on the forearm. Mechanically fine.

   LOT 3316 Scarce Documented Brass Frame Ball & Williams Ballard Patent Single Shot Sporting Rifle - Serial no. 2486, 44 RF cal., 26 1/8 inch octagon bbl., blue/silver finish, walnut stock. This rifle is listed by serial number among the sixteen identified brass frame Ballard rifles on page 19 of “Ballard: The Great American Single Shot Rifle” by Dutcher who estimated over 200 were manufactured.
It has a blade front sight, two-leaf rear sight, the Ballard patent marking on the upper right
barrel flat, the Ball & Williams marking on the upper barrel flat, the Merwin & Bray marking on the upper
left barrel flat, under barrel ejector, matching serial numbers on the barrel and frame, matching partial serial number “86” on the left side of the breechblock, and smooth stock and forearm
with brass end cap and buttplate. CONDITION: Good with traces of original blue finish remaining on the barrel and a dark brown patina and some mild pitting on the balance, attractive aged

 patina on the brass frame and furniture, some punch marks in the frame, and general moderate overall wear. The wood is also good and has some small flakes and

LOT 3317 Merrimack Arms & Mfg. Co. Dual Ignition Ballard Military Rifle - Serial no. 20225, 50 cal., 30 1/8 inch round bbl., blue/casehardened finish, walnut stock. Manufactured c. 1867-1869. Features a blade front sight, two-leaf rear sight, “No 50” between the rear sight and serial number on the barrel at the breech, matching serial number on the receiver ring, manual ejector under the barrel, address marking on the left side of the frame, dual ignition hammer and breech block (percussion or rimfire), and smooth stock and forearm. CONDITION: Very good with 25% original blue finish with the balance of the barrel fading to smooth brown patina, damaged percussion nipple, strong original case colors in the protected areas, mottled gray and brown patina on the frame and furniture, some minor oxidation, and mild overall wear. The stock and forearm are both very good with mild wear, some darker spots, some lines along the grain on the left side of the buttstock, and mild dings and scratches. Mechanically fine. LOT 3318 British Proofed Serial Number 11 Frank Wesson Second Type Two Trigger Single Shot .22 Caliber Rifle - Serial no. 11, 22 RF cal., 24 inch octagon bbl., blue/nickel finish, highly figured walnut stock. Manufactured between 1872 and 1888. Marked “11” on many of the components. Globe front sight, adjustable notch rear sight, tang mounted peep sight, and barrel marked “FRANK WESSON WORCESTER MASS./PAT’D OCT 25 1859 & NOV 11 1862”. Toggle link on the left side of the barrel and manual ejector on the right side. The barrel bears British proofs on the right side near the chamber. Nicely figured walnut straight grip stock with “A105” behind the lower tang and a nickel crescent buttplate. CONDITION: Excellent, retaining 97% original nickel plating on the frame and 80% original blue on the barrel, scattered light spotting, and some wear along the high edges. The wood is very fine with numerous small scratches and some pressure marks. Mechanically excellent. Provenance: The Milan J. Turk Collection. Estimate: 1,800 - 2,750
LOT 3319 R. Ball & Co. Ballard Patent Dual Ignition Single Shot Sporting Rifle - Serial no. 17324, 44 cal., 24 inch octagon bbl., blue/ casehardened finish, walnut stock. This rifle falls towards the end of the noted R. Ball & Co. serial number range (16000-18000) noted as manufactured c. 1865- 1866 and correctly only has the Ballard patent and Merwin & Bray markings on the frame. The barrel has a globe front sight, folding rear sight (longer leaf broken), “No 44” and the matching serial number on top, and the manual ejector underneath. In addition to the noted markings, the action has a peep sight. CONDITION: Very good with mostly smooth brown patina on the barrel, darker patina on the breech section of the frame and mottled gray patina on the balance, repaired lower tang, some minor oxidation, and general mild wear. The wood is good and has some slivers absent at the edges, thin cracks, and mild scratches and dings. Mechanically fine. Provenance: The Milan J. Turk Collection. Estimate: 950 - 1,600
