                     LOT 3070
Rare Documented Winchester Model 1886 Lever Action Musket with Factory Letter - Serial no. 82410, 45-70 cal., 30 inch round bbl., blue finish, walnut
stock. Manufactured in 1893. The top of the barrel is marked “-MANUFACTURED BY THE/WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN, CONN. U,S.A.-” ahead
of the rear sight and “45-70” at the breech. The lower tang is marked “PAT. OCT. 14, 1884/JAN. 20, 1885” directly behind the trigger and the serial number at the
end, with “-MODEL 1886-” marked on the upper tang. Blade front sight, adjustable rear “ski slope” sight graduated to 1,200 yards. Mounted with a smooth full walnut forearm
with single barrel band equipped with a sling swivel and steel forend cap, and straight grip stock with sling swivel and carbine buttplate with compartment containing an original
5-piece cleaning rod. The accompanying factory letter verifies the musket configuration, caliber and that it was received and shipped from the warehouse on September 14, 1893,
with 9 other arms on order number 22833. Experts estimate that total production of the Model 1886 Musket was just over 350 pieces. Model 1886 muskets are extremely rare; most of these muskets were apparently manufactured for export. The Model 1866 Musket was made in smaller numbers than any other Model 1886 variation and is the rarest of the scarce Winchester lever action muskets.
CONDITION: Very good. The barrel retains traces dark original blue finish mainly in the protected area along the forearm with a smooth mottled brown patina on the balance. The breech bolt retains much of the faded original blue finish, and the remaining parts have a smooth mottled gray patina. The wood is also very good with a number of small minor scratches on the upper left rear of the forearm and some scattered minor dings and dents on balance. The markings are clear. The action is excellent. The Winchester Model 1886 Musket is the rarest of all Winchester Muskets.
Provenance: The Milan J. Turk Collection.
Estimate: 9,500 - 14,000
LOT 3071
Rare Winchester Model 1892 Lever Action Musket with Bayonet - Serial no. 372420, 44 WCF cal., 30 inch round bbl., blue finish, walnut stock. It is
estimated that less than 1% of the total Model 1892 production was in the musket configuration. The top of the barrel is marked with the two line address/
patent dates ahead of the rear sight, and the breech end is marked “44W.C.F.” over the Winchester oval proof, which is also marked on the top of the receiver at the
breech. The upper tang is marked “MODEL 1892/-WINCHESTER-/TRADE MARK”, and the serial number appears on the bottom of the receiver. Blade front sight, folding ladder
rear sight graduated to 800 yards and mounted with a smooth full length forearm secured by two barrel bands and straight grip stock with carbine buttplate with cleaning rod compartment (rod not
included) and sling swivel on the stock and forward barrel band. Manufactured in 1906. Complete with an original Winchester triangular socket bayonet correctly left in the white and unmarked. Winchester
had high hopes of selling these muskets to the U.S. Government as well and civilians; however, orders never came about, making them extremely rare and desirable to collectors today.
CONDITION: Very good. The metal surfaces have a smooth mottled gray patina with traces of original blue finish on the exposed magazine tube and protected areas around the front sight. The wood is also very good with some overall scattered minor scratches and dings. The bayonet is fine with some scattered discoloration. The markings are clear and crisp. Mechanically excellent.
Provenance: The Milan J. Turk Collection.
Estimate: 7,500 - 9,500
