The included letter from the Smithsonian states the cannon matches those used in the Malay States (Malaysia) and were used for firing salutes. It also notes they were used as currency and status symbols in Borneo. "We are un able to precisely date your piece but the type has been made from the mid-sixteen century to comparatively modern times." Fine with golden bronze tones overall and mild pitting.

Description:

The documents identify this piece as: "the powder chamber from an ancient bronze petarara [these were made in the 15th century]. . .Found by a sponge diver off the coast of Turkey. . .Breech block from a 17th Century Swivel Gun." Multiple of these breechblocks could be loaded in advance and swapped after the cannon/swivel gun was fired allowing for a fairly rapid rate of fire. The Smithsonian letter states that these are "quiet rare from the private collector's point of view" and were used from the late 14th century into the 18th century. It measures 8" long and has a 1.5" bore. Fine with heavy oxidation, verdigris, and other wear consistent with long periods of submersion in saltwater. Very few of these survive. Most were discarded or melted down over the centuries.
