This work was produced by the Decorative Arts League of New York in a limited casting, possibly limited to an edition as small as 25 pieces. This attractive plaque features the likeness of the late President Theodore Roosevelt in a profile view to the right. Inscribed below: "AGGRESSIVE FIGHTING FOR THE RIGHT IS THE NOBLEST SPORT THE WORLD AFFORDS." This plaque of Roosevelt is especially fitting in the context of the Dr. and Mrs. Duckor Collection of Saint-Gaudens double eagles, a series that began when Roosevelt, the subject of this bas relief, contacted Saint-Gaudens, the mentor of Fraser who created the plaque. Fraser is known in numismatics as the designer of the Buffalo nickel and various commemorative issues. He was born in Winona, Minnesota, on November 4, 1876, the son of Thomas Fraser, a railroad engineer. As a teenager, he studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and participated in artwork at the World's Columbian Exposition. Soon after, he was admitted to the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. A sculpture that was completed in 1894 when he was just 17 years old, the "End of the Trail" is generally considered his most famous individual work. That sculpture won the $1,000 award of the American Art Association in Paris where Augustus Saint-Gaudens was a judge. As a result of that competition, Saint-Gaudens asked Fraser to be his assistant, and he became Fraser's mentor. Fraser's remarkable career came to a close on October 11, 1953, when he died at his Westport, Connecticut home. By James Earle Fraser (Am: 1876-1953).
