Description:

1) Short waisted jacket, dark blue felt construction with tan cloth lining, yellow ribbon trim, brass buttons and a set of First Sergeant insignia (black and yellow felt construction with black thread embroidery to create the chevrons) on each arm. Some of the buttons are detached but included. The interior is black ink stamped "1731 A/40" on the back, "MILLER/PHILA/COSTUMER" inside the right sleeve (partially visible on a torn out section of the left sleeve) and "I. HABER & Co./NEW-YORK/5 Nov.64." The Miller costume firm was active from 1876 to 1961; it is unknown where/how they acquired the jacket. 2) Forage cap, felt construction with a leather visor, with "3/(crossed swords)/A" pins on the crown and a Charles Naylor maker's mark on the interior. The sweatband is nearly detached, and the "3" and "A" are attached through the lining. Date of manufacture unknown. The 3rd Cavalry (originally a Regiment of Mounted Rifles) saw action in the Mexican-American War, the Civil War and onward, included several prominent Confederates, Kit Carson and General Patton among their number, and liberated the Ebensee concentration camp in World War II.
