This is example is 1 of approximately 1,500 lever action Navy pistols manufactured with an 8" barrel circa 1855-1857. The top barrel flat is marked "THE VOLCANIC/REPEATING ARMS CO./PATENT NEW HAVEN CONN FEB 14, 1854". The matching serial number is marked on the right side of the lever, frame under the grips and on each grip panel. It has a blue barrel, casehardened hammer and lever, and is fitted with smooth varnished walnut grips.
