Description:

This lot contains a rare 1st Special Service Force U.S. enlisted service uniform. Known as the "Devil's Brigade", the 1st Special Service Force was a joint World War II American-Canadian commando unit organized in 1942 and trained at Fort William Henry Harrison near Helena, Montana. The jacket has the FSSF arrowhead shoulder patch, U.S. Army brass buttons, rare enlisted crossed arrows and U.S. collar insignia, ruptured duck above the right breast pocket and jump wings over 5 service ribbon ribbons (Bronze Star Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, American Defense Service Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, WWII Victory Medal) above the left breast pocket. The left sleeve has one service stripe and 4 overseas service bars. Also with the jacket is a size 15 1/2, 33 long sleeve uniform shirt, Goodall Co. size 34x33 trousers, and a reversible hooded parka, one side green and the other white, with brown fur trim around the edge of the hood, green/white plastic buttons, green cord draws at the waist and hood, and button-adjustable collars. No maker's markings or labels are present. World War II archive from OSS Operative Major James Goodwin (1918-1999) who operated in Yugoslavia during World War II and received the Purple Heart, Legion of Merit and British Military Cross. 1) A cotton Special Operations Executive (SOE) armband with cotton Union Jack flag patch; 2) British parachutist's wings in blue and white thread on tan cotton; 3) gold bullion OSS Operations Commando patch on black cloth; 4) an original carbon copy of a secret OSS "Report of Flotsam Mission" written by James Goodwin which details combined operations in Slovenia between OSS agents and locals; 5) a 6 July 1945 dated memorandum from James Goodwin to Lt. Commander Shaheen, USNR discussing the effects of underwater explosives; and 6) a 12 January 1962 dated black and white photograph of Supreme Allied Commander, NATO General Lauris Norstad and Col. James Goodwin of the 11th Engineer Group, Mannheim, Germany. Goodwin later saw action in Korea and was part of a small group of men who formed U.S. Special Forces. He retired from the Army in 1962. The jacket is very fine showing a few scattered moth holes and a 1 inch long tear near the lower right pocket. The shirt is also very fine with a couple of stitched repairs. The pants are very good with a few scattered stains and moth holes. The parka is very good with some light stains and a few areas of loose/rough stitching, especially on the white side. OSS archive items are good to very good showing typical age and wear.
