Description:

Originally made as a bayonet for the 1861 Plymouth rifle, this example has had the guard and muzzle ring cut down; consignor notes suggest that this was a period modification by troopers who wanted to retain the Dahlgren as a big belt knife after the Plymouth was retired. 16 1/2" OAL, 11 7/8" blade dated "1861", wood and brass guard, leather sheath taken from a later Hospital Corps knife. With a powder flask with raised "U.S.N." markings, "JSP" inspection stamps, and "ADAMS" and "1848" on the spout. The blade is polished and sharpened, some post-service markings on the hilt, generally good overall.
