Description:

This is a desirable example of a Remington Model 700 type sniper rifle that has been assembled using correct type M40 parts to duplicate an original Vietnam era M40 sniper rifle. This example was assembled/manufactured sometime in the 1970/80s. The receiver was manufactured circa 1966/67 and has been correctly roll marked with "U.S." over the original serial number. However, the receiver has not been stripper clip slotted like original M40s, but it does have an early style thumb relief cut at the rear of the ejection port. It is has been refitted with an original Remington M40 type barrel with six lands and grooves, the correct tapered profile (measuring 1.25 at the breech to .850 at the muzzle), and a flat muzzle crown. The barrel has the various Remington factory barrel codes, slightly offset indicating it was rotated/set back when refitted. It has an early blued bolt which has been (electro-etched) with the matching rifle serial number. It is fitted with the early Remington one-piece aluminum trigger guard, floorplate and stamped, nickel plated follower. The rifle has an M40 pattern, walnut stock with monte-carlo style cheek piece and Remington marked checkered steel buttplate. The stock has been glass-bedded in the action area, and the barrel is free-floated and is serial number/matching in the barrel channel. It has the early Remington 1 1/2 inch wide sling swivels. The left side has been restamped with a DOD cartouche. It's fitted with an early green anodized Redfield 3X-9X Accu-Range telescopic with the built-in auto-ranging reticle, standard medium cross-hairs, the additional range estimation stadia wires, and the clear plastic (tombstone) ranging scale (which is loose) inside the scope. This allowed the sniper to estimate the ranges from 200-800 yards by increasing or decreasing the power ring. The scope is mounted in an early Redfield one-piece scope base which has been renumbered to match the rifle. The base has the early style 1 inch split rings stamped "64" on the underside. The original rifle serial number was removed from the scope; it was tapped off, repainted (flat black) and renumbered to match this rifle. The steel components have a light gray parkerized finish similar to that originally applied, and the top halves of the scope rings are blued. The bolt body has a brown patina type finish. The Redfield scope has a olive green anodized finish and the rifle serial number restamped on the scope base and correctly reelectro-penciled on the side of the scope tube. The rifle serial number falls into the same documented range as original M40s; however, this serial number is NOT listed or identified by Remington as an original M40 sniper.
