Description:

37 1/2" OAL, 32" blade with etched decoration, nickel finish, black synthetic grip and nickel scabbard. The right side near the tip is etched "Elliott C. Babcock". Consignor notes identify Babcock as Major Elliott Coddington Babcock, United States Army. Born in Illinois and raised in Florida, he joined the Army Reserve in 1929 as a 2nd Lieutenant, and at the onset of WWII was a Company Commander with the Civilian Conservation Corps. Deployed to the Philippines, he served as an officer with the 57th Infantry Regiment of the 15th Infantry Division, and was one of many soldiers stuck on the island when it fell to Japan. Taken as a POW, Major Babcock survived the infamous Bataan Death March only to find himself on the Oryoku Maru, an infamous IJN "Hell Ship". Oryoku Maru came under air attack from the USS Hornet, and was sunk; it is estimated that 100 POWs had already died from on-board conditions, and a further 200 from a combination of American bombardment or being shot by the Japanese while attempting to swim for safety. Babcock was among those lost in the incident. The Army would later honor Babcock by naming an Army Reserve Center in West Palm Beach for him in 1958. Very good overall.
