The accompanying factory letter lists this Model 1873 saddle ring carbine as being shipped from the factory with a 17 inch barrel on July 24, 1882. Standard carbine barrels were 20 inches, making this a rare factory variation of the Model 1873. In fact, Model 1873 carbines were rarely ordered with any type of special order features.
