Description:

Manufactured in circa 1880, this gun was manufactured by the firm of Frederick Barnes & Co. of London. The firm had been established by Barnes at 109 Fenchurch Street in 1825 and remained continually active at these premises as well as other secondary premises until the business closed in 1904. It is understood this gun was formerly the property of British journalist and shooting author James Wentworth Day who had served as a BBC wartime correspondent during the Second World War, first in France and then the Near East before being invalided home in 1943. Wentworth Day was an especially keen wildfowler and purchased his own grounds, “Adventurers’ Fen”, in Cambridgeshire, England. The damascus barrel has a bold twist pattern and is fitted with a folding rear sight on the short sighting flat at the breech end. The substantial action has a carved percussion fence, and the rebounding backaction lock is unsigned. Border engraved throughout, slight traces of a nickel-plated finish remain. The figured pistolgrip stock has a rubber recoil pad, checkered grip and forearm, the latter with grip-catch release and horn cap. Weight 19 lbs. 13 oz. Provenance: The Malcolm King Collection.
