Description:

This finely engraved percussion rifle has handwritten instructions for loading from the makers dated 1874 stored in the case. With browned damascus twist octagonal barrel with broad raised matted full length sighting rib signed “WILLIAM POWELL & SON”, fitted with a bead front sight and express rear sight of one standing and six folding leaves each with platinum inlaid center line and engraved from “1” to “7” (for 100 to 700 yards), and recessed patent breech engraved with scrollwork and a shell, and fitted with a platinum plug engraved with a rosette. Standing breech with long tang and sidelock signed “WM. POWELL & SON. BIRMINGHAM” and fitted with safety catch. The standing breech, lock and furniture all with fine border and scroll engraving. The lock engraved with a vignette involving two running deer and the hinged patchbox cover with a tiger. The barrel struck with Birmingham proof marks. Figured pistol grip half stock with checkered grip and forearm, the left side of the butt inset with a silver oval engraved “NEWTON CROSS”, the underside of the butt with a sling eye corresponding to another sling eye on the underside of the ramrod pipe beneath the barrel. With iron mounted ramrod. With brass cornered mahogany fitted case with accessories including brass conical bullet mold, iron ball mold serial numbered to the rifle and Hawksley powder flask, the lid with printed William Powell & Son trade label.
