Description:

Langet inscribed "Presented July 20 1876 to/Capt W H C Jaques/Ottumwa Iowa By his friends" and scabbard inscribed "Capt Jaques." Good with moderate overall wear, scabbard throat absent, broken folding langet latch, and mild oxidation. Captain William Henry Clay Jaques (1841-1917) first served in D Company of the 19th Iowa Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War and then as captain of V Company of the 56 U.S. Colored Troops until they mustered out in the fall of 1866. In civilian life, he studied law at Harvard and was a lawyer and held government positions in Ottumwa, Iowa, and a proud G.A.R. member.
