This fine quality British hammergun was made in circa 1872 by Francis Brebner who is recorded at 92 Bondgate, Darlington from 1866. This gun has several of the stylistic features associated with best quality northern British gunmakers. With browned damascus barrels engraved with a wide band of stylized foliage at the breech ends, the raised concave rib signed “F. BREBNER. 92 & 93. BONDGATE DARLINGTON. PRIZE MEDAL INTERNATIONAL EXHIBITION LONDON. 1870.” on the rib and engraved with scrollwork each retaining traces of gilding. The barrel flats are marked “ERSKINE’S PATENT” for J. Erskine’s British Patent of April 17, 1868 for braized or soldered barrel lumps fitted into a dovetailed groove. Border and scroll engraved action and non-rebounding sidelocks, the locks each with sculpted hammer and signed “F. BREBNER”.
