Description:

Manufactured 1861-74, sideplate inscribed "LT. COL. SALUE VAN ANDA/21st IOWA INF" and butt inscribed "David Earl." With leather holster. Lt. Col. Salue van Anda (1835-1888) was a prominent Northern Iowa lawyer and commanded 21t Regiment Iowa Infantry Volunteers during the Civil War including the charge at Black River, Mississippi on May 17, 1863 where the regiment suffered heavy causalities in less than three minutes. Taking heavy fire during the assault on Fort Beauregard, his horse was shot from under him but he managed to rally his troops to safety. He also led the regiment during the capture and occupation of the City of Mobile. After the war he returned home to continue his law practice. Copies of van Anda's military records and consignor research are included.
