One of only two prototypes manufactured c. 1861. Top of barrel marked "G. SHALK POTTSVILLE 1861". Very small number "2" marks visible on various parts. Schalk rifle muskets are described on pages 570-574 of George D. Moller's book "American Military Shoulder Arms Volume III" with this exact rifle photographed on pages 571 and 572.
