Description:

The Civilization of America by Clement A. Masier (French 1847-1932). A subtitle would be Buffalo with Four Women. This dynamic western sculpture shows the fascination with the then-new America on how it was struggling to be "civilized" (to be like French culture). The sculpture shows a bison surrounded by four semi-draped females with one holding a spear, another a torch, another an arrow, and finally another holding a club. This mythological depiction is very characteristic of how ancient societies depicted their own history. The dimensions are HT: 13", W: 13 1/2", D: 8", weight approximately 40 pounds. Very good condition. The artist signature is impressed on the right rear of the bronze base. The bronze rests on a heavy green marble plinth. This is truly quite an unusual piece for early Americana but this was how the western world was seeing our new country.
