Description:

This unusual hammerless shotgun was manufactured c. 1880-1885 using James Lang's patent triggerplate lever-cocking action (patent no. 545 of February 9, 1878). The sideplates are each signed "JOHN ECROYD,/LOMESHAYE. NR. BURNLEY," and it is believed that this is the name of the original owner. The Ecroyd family were a wealthy family who owned cotton and worsted mills in the Lomeshaye area of Lancashire, England. With heavy browned Damascus barrels each engraved with a band of beadwork at the breech end and 2 7/8" chambers. Solid raised concave rib with bead sight, signed "W. WALTON. BURNLEY" and engraved with a spray of scrollwork at the breech end. Action with carved fences, blued removable firing-pin bushings, gold colored cocking-indicators, automatic safety with gold inlaid "SAFE," engraved "LANG'S PATENT" on the top strap, underlever with checkered tip and sideplates mimicking sidelocks. With classic English bouquet and scroll engraving throughout, the sideplates and underside of the action engraved with game birds and dogs. Figured 14" walnut stock with rubber recoil pad, checkered grip and forearm, and blank silver oval initial escutcheon. London "Not For Ball" black powder proof marks and Birmingham nitro reproof marks. Provenance: The Malcolm King Collection
