The No. 5 Holster Model revolvers were the largest of Colt's Paterson handguns and achieved fame as a result of their use by Captain Jack Hays and other Texas Rangers on the frontier. This led to Samuel Walker working with Samuel Colt to relaunch his firearms business starting with the famous Colt Model 1847 Walker used in the Mexican-American War and the establishment of Colt's Patent Fire Arms Manufacturing Co. and the famous Colt Armory where subsequent models were manufactured. This revolver comes in a custom case with a blank silver lid escutcheon, a second cylinder, loading tool, charge/powder flask, cleaning rod, key, and ball mold. "153" is marked on the back of the barrel lug, both cylinders (along with a "2" on the spare), the ratchet, the frame under the trigger, in the hammer well, left side of the front strap, right side of the back strap, and hand marked inside the rear mortise of the grip. An appraisal from Leon C. Jackson of Jackson Arms for Perry Johnson in 1984 is included describing the revolver as: "A Colt Paterson revolver, holster size, with 9" barrel, serial no. 153. The gun is basically genuine but has been very heavily re-worked and refinished. The backstrap has been welded and the grips may or may not be original. The gun is equipped with two cylinders, both numbered 153, on which the cylinder engraving is clear and distinct. The casing is modern and incorrect for a Paterson case. Of the accessories, the extra cylinder and the combination ball and powder charger appear to be genuine. The ball and powder charger is numbered 22. Other accessories - the cleaning rod, the combination loading tool the mould are replicas, the mould being the wrong size." We identified the ball and powder charger as also being a reproduction.
