Description:

Manufactured c. 1863-1865, with a set of "crown/V" British proofs on the chamber and receiver, faint military inspection cartouches on the wrist, "13" stamped and "m. IL/ForT LArAmIE/1867" carved into the left side of the butt. Notes supplied with the item attribute it as the property of one George Torbert, son of Civil War General Alfred Thomas Torbert and Indian Agent in Wyoming. Per the notes, Torbert resided on the Wind River Reservation, where he was issued this carbine, and passed it down to later generations of his family. No explanation for the British proofs is given.
