Description:

Only an estimated 1,000 "Volcanic" carbines were manufactured by the New Haven Arms Co. in 1857-1860. They are important pieces in the evolution of Winchester firearms as the predecessors of the Henry rifle. Matching serial numbers are marked on the upper tang screws, left side of the lower tang, buttplate screws, heel of the stock twice, and heel tang of the buttplate. The right side of the butt has a silver patriotic escutcheon inscribed "Presented /By/J R Morris/To/Maj H F Beebe" over a masonic compass and rule. Further to the rear are crossed U.S. and Confederate national flags. Major Hinkley Francis Beebe (1831-1901) was an officer of the 38th Iowa Volunteer Infantry. Includes a Willy Wallach "Diary for 1865" with Beebe's name and unit inside and a leather "wallet" of other documents mainly relating to Beebe, including his appointment as captain of the 38th Iowa Infantry on the 4th of November 1862 and promotion to major on the 8th of January 1864. An included Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States Commandery of the State of Missouri memoriam for Beebe indicates he was born in Columbus, New York, and married Minerva Case in 1852 and then moved to Waverly, Iowa, in 1856. He served as a first lieutenant in Company G of the 9th Iowa infantry in 1861 and resigned due to ill health in March of 1862 after the Battle of Pea Ridge. After his recovery, he became captain of Company B of the 28th Iowa Volunteer Infantry on November 4, 1862. At the beginning of 1865, the regiment was consolidated with the 34th Iowa Volunteer Infantry. He is noted as "a brace and faithful officer" and as fighting at Sugar Creek, Pea Ridge, Vicksburg, Fort Morgan, Fort Blakeley, and Fort Fisher. After the war, he moved to Carthage, Missouri, and later Kansas City. His father and brother also served in the Iowa infantry during the Civil War.
