Description:

The included letter from arms historian John T. Callahan states the factory records lists this rifle with 26 inch takedown barrel in .303 Savage and shotgun butt when accepted by the Savage factory on February 17, 1912, returned to the factory on March 15, 1912 (possibly when .30-30 barrel was added), and was sold to Mr. John H. Rebold on November 1, 1913. Although not listed in the factory records, the rifle features a factory Grade B engraving consisting of fine scrollwork surrounding circular game vignettes by noted Savage engraver Enoch Tue. Take down non-functioning. In the letter Callahan concludes, "The features of this rifle do not appear to fit any one version of any Model 1899 built around the date of this firearm. It is my conjecture that this rifle was built as some sort of sample or Savage may have agreed to furnish it as a special order item." Provenance: The Bailey Brower, Jr. Collection, author of “Savage Pistols”
