Manufactured without a chamber date and bearing a combination of commercial and military proofmarks, this Luger has a serial number of "m28" on the receiver and frame, with "28" on many other components. The use of a letter prefix in the serial number runs contrary to traditional German military numbering schemes, with some suggestion that the "m" was intended to denote a sample or prototype weapon. Page 243 of Still's "Weimar and Early Nazi Lugers" features the "m10" Luger, and notes it as one of only four "m" Lugers reported, along with this pistol.
