Per the included letter, this rifle was invoiced on September 19, 1871, to H.E. Adams of Rutland, Vermont, and is noted as a "Sporting Octagon rifle" in .44 caliber using a 2 1/4 inch Berdan shell with a 28 inch barrel, double set triggers, and oil finished wood. It was priced at $45. It was returned on January 1, 1872, possibly for repair. Only around 1,000 New Model 1869 carbines and sporting rifles were manufactured c. 1869-1871. The consignor's notes indicate that the action was purchased from Russell Galloway of Livingston, Montana, in 1980-1982, and the rest of the parts were acquired from various sources. It was first rebuilt by the consignor and then rebuilt again by Ron Long and completed in 2001. The sights were copied from a Model 1869 rifle owned by Jerry Mayberry. Provenance: The Russell Galloway Collection; Property of a Gentleman

Rating Definition:

Very fine as professionally rebuilt/refinished with a few patches of oxidation and generally only minor wear. Mechanically fine.
