Description:

The Third Model Colliers were the first percussion revolvers when they were manufactured c. 1824-1827. Much of Colt’s historic lawsuits of 1851 and 1852 centered around Collier having achieved cylinder rotation by drawing back the cock on the First Model Collier revolvers. Approximately 80 Colliers in numerous variations are known today out of approximately 250 made. The only marking seen on this example is "COLLIER PATENT" on the lock. This revolver is shown in both volumes of "Clockwork Basilisk: The Early Revolvers of Elisha Collier & Artemas Wheeler" by Ben Nicholson. In the first volume on page 297 it is shown and compared with another early Third Model Collier revolver, and they are noted as "likely prototype designs." In the second volume, it is featured on page 487 where it is noted as sold at Christie's in 1992 but as otherwise having unknown provenance. The notes state: "Likely a percussion prototype. Cylinder shroud is enlarged to prevent accidental detonation of nipples. Has military style hook-screw on rear of plate." Provenance: The Charles Marx Collection

Rating Definition:

Good with shortened barrel, dark brown and gray patina on the iron along with some oxidation and pitting, deep aged patina on the silver side plate, cracks and chips in the period sanded and refinished grip, and moderate wear. Mechanically good.
