Description:

Uniform set for an aviator-rated Army Chaplain, including a twill cloth tunic and cap. The cap is trimmed in black around the crown, with a cross on the right side, "winged propeller" on the left, and a hand-marked tag reading "Lt. William C. Burton" beneath the leather sweat band. The tunic has "U.S.R." and "winged propeller" pins on the collar, gilt 2nd Lieutenant's bars on the shoulder boards along with stitched-in white crosses, and a silver bullion set of Junior Aviator Wings on the left breast. A Society Brand Clothing label, hand-marked to Burton, is present in the right inside pocket. Also included with the group is a Signal Corps pin, a spring-loaded watch band decorated for the World War 1 Flyers Club of Fort Worth, Texas, and a sterling silver wristband inscribed to Burton. Records show a Lieutenant William C. Burton as a base chaplain and athletic director at Barron Field, Texas circa 1918, one of the Army Air Service's earliest training facilities established with the assistance of the British Royal Flying Corps and a major source of aviators for the American Expeditionary Force; while not explicit, this would be consistent with the uniform style. Records are limited, but Burton resided in Texas at least as late as 1924. Provenance: The Putnam Green/Sycamore Collection

Rating Definition:

The cap shows a number of small holes and some tearing of the sweatband, and some mild staining and wear on the tunic.
