Description:

Both swords in the lot are attributed by the consignor as 18th century production. 1) Cup hilt rapier, 42" OAL with a 35" diamond cross section blade, ribbed and pierced cup guard, 10" long straight bar quillions, wire wrapped grip and round pommel, with the pommel and quillion studs decorated with a pierced surface and hollow interior. 2) Small sword, 41" OAL, 35" blade with a diamond cross section on the upper two thirds and a deeply fullered hexagonal cross section on the lower third, marked "FRANCIS" in one side, pierced nearly flat cup guard, 4" straight bar quillions, wire wrapped grip, fluted pommel.

Rating Definition:

1) Fine. The blade has been lightly cleaned, with some minor spotting, shallow pitting, and a slight bend near the tip, and a darker gray patina on the hilt. All furniture is tight on the tang. 2) Fine, with scattered pitting and a mixed gray patina overall. Some of the decorative elements of the grip wire are loose, otherwise construction is tight overall.
