OG - POOR- major or minor parts replaced; major replacement parts required and extensive restoration needed; metal deeply pitted; principal lettering, numerals and design obliterated, wood badly scratched, bruised, cracked or broken; mechanically inoperative; generally undesirable as a collectors firearm in its present state.

Description:

Plate on left side of the stock reads "May it always be Productive of Lucky hits/and its Voice a continued echo of the kind wishes of the Doners". The presentation plaque on the right side of stock reads "Presented to Dr. Geo. Suckley/upon his retirement from the United States Army/as a token of the respect & esteem of/Co. H 9th Reg. U.S. Infantry/W.J McCandless 1st Sergeant/James Elton/A.B. Bechtel/W.H. Hubbs/On behalf of the Company/ Washington Territory/Dec. 6th, 1856". According to information provided by the consignor from Appleton's Cyclopedia of American Biography (New York,1888) Dr. George Suckley served as an assistant surgeon in the U.S. Army from 1853-1856. During the start of the Civil War, he enlisted in the United States Volunteers, serving as brigade surgeon and staff surgeon. He was later commissioned a colonel in August of 1865. Upon conclusion of the war, Dr. Suckley returned home to New York until his death in July of 1869. The right side of firearm features major cracks and charring from a previous fire. LOP:14".
