Description:

Militia officers sword with cast helmet pommel c. 1840-1860. The sword has a straight double edged blade with single fuller and a 16 inch bright etched panel. The central feature on each side of the panel is a 10-pointed star surrounding "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and a liberty cap. The star is surrounded by sunbursts. Below the star is a shield with 15 stars. The star and shield are surrounded by conventional foliate etching. The brass hilt has a helmet pommel with eagle crest. The eagle is clutching the replacement chain guard in its beak. The bone grip is checkered with shell panels at the top. The hilt has a silver-plated, mameluke style brass counter guard decorated with cast foliage and scrollwork. The brass scabbard has two suspension bands with three carrying rings and a frog stud. The scabbard is decorated with open floral engraving around the suspension bands and tip. A spread eagle surmounting a federal shield is engraved midway between the lower suspension band and the scabbard tip. OAL:38 1/4" with 31" blade.
