Description:

Rarely encountered Winchester M1894 Carbine with "U S" and the Ordnance 'Shell and Flame' insignia stamped on the top of the receiver on either side of the WRA proof mark. Mde in 1919, the carbine has a the standard 20-inch round barrel with post front sight and folding adjustable leaf rear sight. A saddle ring is attached to a stud on the left side of the receiver. The barrel and receiver are blued with oiled walnut stock and forearm. The stock has a steel carbine buttplate. The left side of the barrel is marked: "MANUFACTURED BY THE WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO./NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A. PATENTED AUGUST 21. 1894." in two lines. "-NICKEL STEEL BARREL-/ESPECIALLY FOR SMOKELESS POWDER" is marked on the left side of the barrel below the rear sight and the caliber designation "30 W.C.F." is located just ahead of the receiver. The serial number, "841652" is located on the underside of the receiver ahead of the lever. "MODEL 1894/-WINCHESTER-/TRADE MARK REG.U.S.PAT. OFF & FGN" is marked in three lines on the top of the receiver tang. The carbine is identical in configuration and markings to serial number "852119" pictured on pages 441 and 442 of THE WINCHESTER BOOK by George Madis. A limited number of Winchester M1894 Carbines are known to have been purchased by the Army Ordnance Department during WWI and issued to various security organizations in the United Sates including "Timber Guards" in the Pacific Northwest. These U.S. marked M1894 Carbines are always found in worn condition and are among the rarest and most desirable of all U.S. issue Winchester long arms.

Rating Definition:

Fine. The carbine retains approximately 70% of the original blue finish. The barrel and magazine have most of the finish intact. The receiver has more than 75% of the thinning blue finish with moderate handling wear on the top and sides. The bolt and lever have about 50% of the blue finish. The buttplate and barrel bands show more wear and have a silver-gray patina. The stock and forearm are in very good condition with moderate handling wear. All metal surfaces are smooth and the markings are crisp. This is a fine example of a very difficult to fine U.S. marked M1894 Carbine. This is one of the few examples of a U.S. M1894 Carbine ever offered for sale.
