Description:

This sword and scabbard is for an elite military organization know as the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company. This group was chartered in 1637 as the Military Company of Massachusetts. The company's aim was to acquaint military officers with the study of military science and leadership. The blade is 29" in length and is plain on the right side and has an etched cartouche with the words "Ancient & Honorable Artillery Co. 1638" in a panel on the left. The grip is leather covered and wound with twisted brass wire ending with a plain brass ferrule. The guard is of a half-basket pattern with a stylized knuckle-bow and two branches. The brass backstrap ends with a birds-head style pommel. The oval leather washer is intact. The scabbard is of black leather and brass mounted fittings.

Rating Definition:

The sword is bright with widely scattered areas of age spotting. The blade edge is unmarred. The brass hilt has nice overall aged patina. The leather grip covering is missing about half. The leather scabbard has a major break at the middle carrying band and another taped repair above the drag. The two carrying rings are attached.
