Description:

Also known as the "Alteration "or "Re-modeled" Model, a large number of Cavalry Model SAA revolvers were returned to the Springfield arsenal and the Colt factory to be altered and refinished, often with little regard to which gun the refinished parts came from, resulting in a mix of serial numbers and markings. This revolver, for example, has parts with Clark and Carr inspector marks. Single line italic address on top of the barrel, with sections missing from the "o" in "Co" and "A" in "HARTFORD" , with "6367" under the ejector rod housing. The frame has the three line, three date patent markings, with the "U.S." marking to the right, and "D.F.C" on the toe. The trigger guard and backstrap are numbered to the frame, with "G" inspector marks. The cylinder is marked "039" on the circumference, matching the frame, but has the "R.A.C." Carr sub-inspector proof on the rear face of the cylinder. The grips are smooth walnut, with no visible cartouches. The documents included are copies of original documents prepared by the ATF and Colt Manufacturing Company. The ATF, Colt Historical Research Department, and Colt Firearms Control Staff researched each firearm. This was part of an ATF investigation to ensure that each of the firearms were in fact original and not forgeries or renumbered in any way. The facts on the research information sheets are directly from the Colt records and Colt Historical Research Department.

Rating Definition:

Partially refinished/ restamped (on cylinder and backstrap) with the balance mostly pitted brown patina. The surface has been cleaned, with a mottled brown and gray patina overall, parts of the barrel address made unreadable, and significant wear on some of the other markings. The frame has faded and darkened, with some traces of the original casehardening pattern. The grips are fair, with some shrinkage, rounding and chipping of the heel and toes, and some scratches and dents. The action needs work.
