Description:

Made in 1898, the first year that Colt would guarantee the SAA for use with smokeless powder in catalogs and advertisements. This revolver was shipped from the factory on January 26 of the same year to Colt's San Francisco agency, as one of a pair. The standard cut blade front sight has been cut down slightly on the top, and the barrel is marked with a slightly off-center one line Hartford address, and "38 COLT." caliber marking. The frame is equipped with the transverse cylinder pin latch, and stamped with the two line, three date patent markings next to the circled Rampant Colt on the left side. Grips are checkered hard rubber, with the Rampant Colt logos at the top. The documents included are copies of original documents prepared by the ATF and Colt Manufacturing Company. The ATF, Colt Historical Research Department, and Colt Firearms Control Staff researched this firearm. This was part of an ATF investigation to ensure the firearm was in fact original and not a forgery or renumbered in any way. The facts on the research information sheets are directly from the Colt records and Colt Historical Research Department. Also included is a Colt factory letter dated December 7, 1962, which matches the information found in the later ATF/ Colt documents.

Rating Definition:

Partially refinished with the barrel and cylinder both an artificial brown patina. Most of the balance of the blue surfaces have taken on a mixed light brown patina, with a few light scratches and dings. The frame has darkened, though the original casehardened pattern remains visible. The grips are heavily worn, with a few dings and wear indicative of use but not abuse. The action could use work, but is otherwise very good.
