Description:

Made in 1888 and shipped to Hartley & Graham of New York on December 4, with 5 other similar guns. The gun was sent in "soft" finish, meaning that the final bluing and casehardening were skipped so the user could make their own arrangements, in this case a very fine scroll engraving, possibly the work of L.D. Nimschke. Blade front sight on barrel with two line block letter address, acid etched caliber marking reading "COLT D.A. 41", and scroll engraving with punch dot background extending from the breech to the front sight. The cylinder has similar scroll and dot engraving between the flues, and a wavy line and dot border on the rear edge. The style continues on the frame, with sunburst patterns on both sides of the recoil shield, and engraving around and partially over the three line three date patent markings. The grip frame is engraved on the sides, on the underside of the trigger guard, the top of the backstrap, and a pattern of zig-zag lines running down the strap almost to the butt. The grips are smooth two piece mother of pearl, with an elaborate "WAC" monogram on the left side. With a letter from the Colt factory, verifying all features except the grips, which were originally rubber, and a set of correspondence between prior owners concerning the history of the piece, along with an original sales receipt.

Rating Definition:

Very fine, with approximately 70% of the original finish, with some minor spotting overall. The barrel shows some fading of the acid etch and a few areas of wear. The cylinder has similar wear, as does the frame. The grip frame shows some dark steel, mostly on the front strap, and some wear to the engraving on the backstrap. The grips are excellent, with a few light handling marks. The action is excellent.
