Description:

This is a fine example of a unaltered early manufacture Model 1898 Krag rifle. These rifles were used through out the Spanish American War and until the development of the Model 1903 rifle. The side of the receiver is marked "U.S./ MODEL 1898 SPRINGFIELD ARMORY" next to the serial number. The walnut stock has a boxed "JSA over 1898" cartouche and two script circle "P" proofs another smaller boxed proof in the pistol grip area. The rifle has all the correct parts and the rear sight has been arsenal modified to the later Model 1902 fully adjustable tangent rear sight with the flip-up peep. It is complete with an original three-piece cleaning rod and oiler in the buttstock compartment, an original "Krag" leather sling and a Krag bayonet and scabbard. The bayonet is marked "US and 1899" and the scabbard is the correct all blued version.

Rating Definition:

Very fine overall. The barrel retains approximately 90% of its blue finish with some light streaks of wear at the muzzle from attaching and removing the bayonet and only minor handling marks overall. The casehardening on the receiver has silvered out considerably to a smooth grayish patina but still shows some traces of the original bright case colors. The stock is fine as lightly sanded with only one small crack in the left side of the hand guard and only a couple tiny handling marks overall. Bayonet is excellent.
