Description:

This is a Beautiful example of a prewar 1903 Sporting rifle as manufactured by R. F. Sedgley Inc. in Philadelphia PA using a 1903 Springfield Armory rifle action. This company was one of the premier rifle buildings in pre and post WWI that rivaled the workmanship of Griffin and Howe. These rifles were all hand built and hand fitted to select grades of walnut stocks that exhibited a high polished and blued finish. The rifle itself is built on a low numbered 1903 Springfield action that was probably reheated by Sedgley and then converted into a "22 W.C.F." rifle just as Griffin and Howe did on many of it's sporting rifles at the time. The bolt face has been reduced to handle the rimmed cartridge and a special internal box magazine has been fabricated and fitted inside the standard 1903 box magazine. The top of the receiver still retains the US 1903 markings and it has been drilled and tapped and fitted with a set of Winchester scope blocks and has a Winchester B5 Scope installed with Lyman micrometer mounts. The top of the barrel is marked "R.F. SEDGLEY INC. PHILIDALPHIA PA." and the left side of the barrel has circled "S" proof of the Sedgley factory and below that is has "22 W.C.F.". It is fitted with a hooded ramp front sight with a Lyman 48C Micrometer rear sight. The stock appears to be a nice straight grained dark claro or English walnut with the typical German style stock with NO cheek piece, High Comb with the long pistol grip and a Schnabel tip on the forend. It has nice fine lined checkered panels on each sides of the pistol grip and forend and it is fitted with a horn grip cap and steel checkered buttplate similar to a Winchester model 54 or 70 rifle.

Rating Definition:

Excellent overall with 99% of the bright original Sedgley blued finish with wear on the edges and high spots with some signs of light wear or scratches on the floorplate. The stock is also in excellent condition showing minor handling marks and scratches from light use. The scope also has 98% of the original blue finish with good optics which are a little cloudy, that a good cleaning would help dramatically. An exceptional example of a desirable prewar sporting rifle in a seldom encountered caliber.
