Description:

This is an early original unaltered M1896 Krag carbine. These carbines were used throughout the Spanish American War and during the early 1900s until the development of the 1903 Springfield rifle. The side of the receiver is marked "U.S. MODEL 1896, SPRINGFIELD ARMORY" next to serial number "70847". It has the original carbine length stock that is fitted with the original carbine saddle ring and sling bar on the left hand side. It has the original short forearm and early style handguard with the barrel band that protects the rear sight. It is fitted with the correct M1896 carbine rear sight that is marked with the letter "C" on the right rear side, designating it as a carbine sight with the original blade front sight and metal front sight protector. The stock is marked with a boxed "JSA / 1897" cartouche on the left side and a single circled gothic "P" proof in the pistol grip area. It has the original three piece cleaning rod and metal oiler in the buttstock.

Rating Definition:

Very good. The receiver assembly has traces of finish remaining on the receiver and side plate, mostly in the protected areas with 25% finish on the magazine cover, but with no rust or corrosion existing. The barrel has traces of the original finish remaining with exposed portion thinning and turning a light brown patina color. The bolt retains it original polish starting to turn a dull gray patina. Trigger guard assembly has faded to patina with one small dent at the bottom. The barrel band and rear carbine sight assembly are faded to patina and the bore of this rifle shows extensive use with moderate pitting throughout. The stock is in good condition with minor dings throughout, primarily on the left side, and the finger grooves still have a fair sharpness to them. The "1897" cartouche is clear and distinct and the "P" proof is visible. The upper hand guard assembly is in excellent condition with 1 or 2 small dings and no cracks. Buttplate shows about 20% fading blue. Although well used, this Spanish American War Krag carbine is still very pleasing to look at overall, and would be a nice addition to a collection.
