Description:

M1922 MI Rifle with "Style B" pistol grip stock and parkerized finish; the unique "B" stock was utilized only on M1922 MI rifle issued to military organizations and some NRA rifle clubs; M1922 MI DCM sales rifles were fitted with the more common "NRA" pistol grip stock and had a blue finish. Nearly all M1922 MI Rifles "B" stock service rifles were arsenal over-hauled before or during WWII and modified to M2 configuration with new stocks and bolts. Unaltered M1922 MI Service Rifles with "B" stocks are among the most difficult of all the Springfield M1922/M2 series rifles to find in original condition. This rifle has the distinctive, pre-war, Springfield Armory, black-green, parkerized finish on the barrel, receiver, trigger guard, floor plate and buttplate. The barrel band, magazine and Lyman 48 rear sight are blued. The bolt is polished and electro-penciled with the serial number, "18270". The bolt handle is marked with the large, hand-stamped "NS" (nickel steel) applied around 1929. The bolt runway is bright. The distinctive "B" stock has a prominent pistol grip, grasping grooves and is fitted with a deeply checkered butt plate with no butt trap. The Lyman 48 micrometer rear sight has the windage gage, correctly, positioned ahead of the sight aperture. The receiver is marked: "U.S./SPRINGFIELD/ARMORY/1922MI/CAL..22/18270" in the second format that allowed the receiver to be tapped and drilled without defacing the markings. The barrel is marked: "SA/ordnance bomb/7-29" behind the front sight base and "LONG RIFLE/CART'GE ONLY" on the left side of the barrel just ahead of the receiver. The stock, correctly, has no proof or inspection marks and is not stamped with the arsenal overhaul markings usually found on the left butt of modified M1922 series rifles. The barrel and receiver are arsenal drilled and tapped for telescopic sight blocks indicating that this rifle was originally manufactured for issue to a rifle club (Ordnance Order (O.O.) 400.3394/74723 S.A. March 6, 1928, states: "Rifles, cal. .22 M1922MI, Parkerized - For issue to rifle clubs - barrels and receivers to be drilled and tapped for telescopic sight blocks. THE SPRINGFIELD 1903 RIFLES, Brophy, page 605-606). The Springfield M1922 series rifles were the best quality .22 caliber rifles manufactured prior to WWII; they were assembled with the same care and skill as the M1903 National Match and set the standard for .22 target rifle accuracy in the 1920s and 30s.

Rating Definition:

Excellent. The rifle retains approximately 97% of the original parkerized finish. The barrel and receiver have nearly all of the original finish intact; finish loss is confined to the floor plate which has some flaking around the magazine cut-out and the trigger guard which has some minor edge wear. The parkerized barrel threads are visible through the screw holes in the receiver which indicates the rifle was drilled and tapped at Springfield Armory prior to being parkerized (THE SPRINGFIELD M1903 RIFLES, page 302). The oil-finished, black walnut, stock is in excellent plus condition with sharp edges on the grasping grooves and only very minor handling wear. All markings are crisp. This is an excellent example of a scarce, original, M1922 MI .22 caliber rifle with Style "B" stock.
