This is an excellent example of a military contract Remington Rolling Block rifle. These rifles were built on the standard large frame, round top, Remington No. 1 Rolling Block action, that were produced from 1869 to 1880 and sold to several countries, both in Europe and South America. This specific rifle has a 43 caliber bore and it appears that it is a bottleneck cartridge which would lead us to believe it is either a 43 Spanish or 43 Egyptian cartridge and contract rifle. It has the standard 35-3/16 inch blued barrel and barrel bands that are held on with screws without any barrel band springs. The action is casehardened. The upper tang is marked with the Remington three line address and patent markings and there are no markings on the sides of the receiver. It is fitted with the military style tangent rear sight with range graduation from 100-400 meters marked on the side of the base with the inverted "V" front that is integral with the base on the barrel. The stock is the military style straight grip version and forend is also the full length military version both fitted with sling swivels on the lower stock area and the middle band respectively. It has the blued breech block , hammer and buttplate and is complete with an original cleaning rod under the barrel and a 18 1/2" military contract triangular socket bayonet (with no scabbard) that is unmarked.

Excellent overall with approximately 95% of the original blue finish showing signs of thinning along the top of the barrel, the barrel bands and forend tip with the balance turning a light brown color. The receiver and trigger guard both have 90% of the original case colors present with more fading and browning on the trigger guard with the receiver showing a deep mottled appearance. The markings are clear and sharp. The stock and forend have a nice even medium brown color that shows numerous light pressure dents and dings on the sides of the buttstock with more marks along the sides of the trigger guard in the wrist area. The forend shows minor handling marks along the sides all just from actual light use. The bayonet is brown overall and shows signs of light old pitting underneath the brown. The bore is bright and shiny with strong rifling. A very nice example of a Remington military contract rifle
