Description:

Restored M1880 Hunting Knife with scabbard. The M1880 Hunting Knife was issued primarily to the cavalry as a utility knife and entrenching tool. The knife appears to be an early pattern with iron guard that has been nickel plated. The oak turned handle has the early marking: "S.W.P./1881" stamped on the top of the butt. The guard is marked: "U.S./SPRINGFIELD" on one side and serial numbered "163" on the opposite side. The leather scabbard has a brass throat and a brass hook marked "RIA" riveted to the top. The scabbard is a "Type 4" modification of the early "Type 2" belt-loop scabbard. The Type 2 scabbards were altered by having the belt loop removed and replaced by a brass hook. The original scabbard markings: "WATERVLIET/ARSENAL" are partially visible below the hook. The original M1880 Hunting Knives had an iron guard and were issued with the scarce Varney Scabbard which proved to fragile for use in the field. All M1880, Iron Guard Hunting Knives are scarce.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. The knife has been professionally restored. The guard has been nickel plated and the blade carefully polished. Some scattered pitting is visible on both the guard and blade. The turned oak handle has been refinished and may be a replacement. The handle is in nearly new condition with perfect "S.W.P./1881" markings on the top. The black leather scabbard is in fine condition. The leather scabbard body is smooth and the stitching is tight. The leather hanger has visible arsenal markings with the usual flex marks. The hook and throat have not been polished and have a nice looking age patina. The "RIA" markings on the hook are clear. The hook is slightly bent. A good example of a scarce Indian War cavalry knife.
