Description:

The seated bronze "Greek Philosopher", probably Archimedes, is 11-7/8" tall. Including the ornate griffon table on which he is leaning and the various scrolls, the bronze is 17" wide. It is mounted on a weighted, ebonized wood base with gilt stringing and gilt ormolu feet matching those on the table above. The table has four legs, with a lions head at the top of each, raised scroll and leaf work in the middle, and paws at the bottom. Atop the desk is a square, a level and two scrolls, one of which is marked "DONNEZ MOI/ UNE POINT DAPPUI/ ET JE/ SOULEVERAL/ LE MONDE" above a drawing of a polyhedron. Between the table legs is the clock itself. The 4-1/4" white enameled dial has Roman numerals and is marked "Bozzo/ A Angiers". The dial is covered by a beveled glass crystal in a gilt brass bezel. A similar but lighter weight hinged cover is on the back. The pendulum and key accompany the clock but the movement needs adjustment. Very good, with some chipping of the base and discoloration of the metal.
