Description:

Manufactured c. the late 18th or early 19th century, this sword is attributed as belonging to Donald Cameron (c. 1821-1868), known as "The King of Pipers". By the 1850s, Cameron had won nearly every major bag piping competition that existed in Scotland, and in 1867 was the first winner of a "Champion of Champions" competition held in Inverness, leading to his being referred to as king of pipers. In the included newspaper clipping about Cameron and this sword, it is stated that he won this sword for placing second at the triennial piping competition in Edinburgh in 1838, at the age of 17. The double edged blade measures 32 1/8 inches long and 1 3/8 inches wide at the ricassos, with two deep fullers running most of the length. The blade is marked "xxx ANDRIA xxx/xxx VARARA xxx" in the fullers on both sides. The guard is of the typical "advanced" 1828 Highland Pattern pierced with mostly hearts and the pommel is a fluted dome with a finial pierced for a tassel. The grip is wire wrapped shagreen and there is a red and white felted knuckle guard inside the basket. Includes an iron scabbard with two hanging rings, ball finial drag, and a German silver band at the throat. The previously mentioned included newspaper clipping is matted in a black finished frame.

Rating Definition:

Fine overall, the blade showing mostly a bright grey patina with some scattered small patches of light pitting, a few minor dings in the edges, and crisp markings. The remainder of the iron shows a grey patina and scattered light pitting.
