Description:

While not individually documented, this rifle is identical in configuration to a group of 20 special configuration K31 straight pull bolt action rifles which were ordered for the Swiss Shooting Club of Mexico (Schweizer Schuetzen Mexico) in the 1970s, chambered for the U.S. .30-06 Springfield cartridge instead of the standard 7.5x55 mm Swiss chambering. This was due to a Mexican government prohibition on the importation of the Swiss cartridge. However, the club was allowed to utilize surplus .30-06 ammunition sourced from the Mexican army, resulting in the request for the specific chambering. The rifles for the order were converted from existing unissued service rifles by Hammerli Lenzburg, with new barrels and a "P" prefix added to the existing serial number (indicating private ownership). Due to the extra 8 mm length of the .30-06 cartridge the standard 7.5 mm Swiss magazines supplied with the rifles could not be loaded with the new chambering, limiting the rifles to single shot only. This specific example features standard winged fixed blade front and tangent rear sights, along with "F+/W" marked globe front sight attached to the standard front sight body and "F+/W" marked micrometer target peep rear sight attached to the rear of the receiver, Swiss "cross in shield" crest on top of the chamber, "86 30-06" marked barrel, and bright "P" prefix added in front of the serial number on the left side of the receiver. With matching serial numbers on the bolt body and magazine. Fitted in an attractive oiled smooth walnut stock with steel buttplate. Included with the lot is photocopies regarding another SSM 30-06 K31 sold through the Swiss Marksmen in Texas, which discusses the particulars of the special order. Not only a standout example of a Swiss K31, but also of a reportedly limited number of rifles ordered for the Schweizer Schuetzen Mexico.

Rating Definition:

Excellent as factory converted to a .30-06 Springfield chambered target rifle, retaining 98% plus of original arsenal deep blue finish with attractive plum coloration on the rear sight base, limited minor edge wear on the barrel bands, and limited handling marks. The stock is also excellent with rich oil finish, distinct walnut grain, crisp finger grasping grooves, and limited minor handling marks overall. Mechanically excellent.
