Description:

Likely manufactured in the mid to late 1800s, this attractive knife bears no maker's marks. Knives such as this one, along with more traditionally shaped "Bowie knives" found incredible popularity in North America during the period, being found on the belts of military men, settlers, explorers, gold prospectors, Native Americans, outlaws, and lawmen. This example shows a refined functionality that is often amiss with knives of the period. It measures 13 inches overall with a 8 3/8 inch spearpoint blade with a diamond cross-section. The simple serpentine guard is of German silver. The full-tang hilt is fitted with smooth antique ivory grip scales, one of which is scrimshawed with an elaborate "PR" monogram. Includes a lightly tooled, well-constructed leather sheath and a copy of a letter from Robert B. Berryman stating that the knife was once part of his collection. Provenance: The Robert B. Berryman Collection, Property of a Gentleman

Rating Definition:

Very fine, the blade mostly bright with a few scattered patches of light spotting and minimal evidence of use. The guard shows some scattered light dings. The non-monogrammed grip scale has a minor crack near the pommel but the grips are otherwise very good with a couple light chips and handling marks. The sheath is very fine with some light wear.
